Precasting Checklist: Quality Check For Better Cast Results

If you’re new to having your wax-carved jewelry cast, it’s important to ensure your piece is ready before sending it off. A well-prepared wax model can make the difference between a perfect cast and one with flaws that may require extra work or even recasting. Use this checklist to make sure your wax piece is in the best shape possible before shipping it to me!

1. Check for Bubbles

Tiny air bubbles in your wax can lead to unwanted holes or weak spots in your final cast. Carefully inspect your piece and smooth out any bubbles before sending it in.

2. Look for Cracks

Cracks in wax models can result in breakage during casting. Even small fractures can expand under heat, so repair any cracks before shipping.

3. Ensure Structural Integrity

  • Are there any areas thinner than 0.8mm? Thin sections may not cast properly or could become too fragile.

  • If your piece has delicate elements like prongs or filigree, make sure they are thick enough to withstand the casting process.

4. Check Your Design for Sharp Edges or Overly Delicate Details

Sharp edges and extra thin details might not cast as intended. Consider slightly rounding off edges or reinforcing weak points.

5. Sprue Placement

If you're attaching your own sprues, make sure they are thick enough and placed in a way that allows for proper metal flow. If you’re unsure, I can attach them for you.

6. Clean Your Wax Model

Any dust, oil, or fingerprints on your wax can impact the casting result. Handle your piece with clean hands and store it in a protective container for shipping.

7. Secure Your Wax for Shipping

Wax is delicate, so pack your piece securely to avoid breakage during transit. Use a sturdy container with padding, and avoid excessive movement inside the package.

Taking a little extra time to check your wax model before sending it in will help ensure a smoother casting process and a better final result. If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to reach out, I'm always happy to help and answer your questions!
