Class Overview:

The perfect two day course for those looking to dive into the world of wax carving for jewelry making. On the first day you’ll learn about essential tools and safety, practice simple carving techniques, textures, and begin designing and shaping a signet ring; if you already have a design in mind I’m happy to deviate from the signet ring and help guide you in what you’re hoping to achieve. There’s no stone setting involved in this class as that will be available in more advanced classes.

The second day focuses on refining your work, exploring the build up method (adding wax to create volume), and the proper way to prepare your ring for casting.  Your rings will be cast in sterling silver (up to 10g of silver) and mailed to you within 20 business days; you’ll then finish it at home by cutting off the sprue and polishing your new baby. By the end of the class you will have grasped key carving techniques, completed a custom design or signet ring in wax, and understand the steps of how to bring your piece to a full finish once it arrives to your home (if needed, I can finish your piece for you in my studio before mailing for an additional $25 fee).

What We’ll Cover:

Day 1: Basics

·       Overview of wax carving tools, types of wax, and other materials.

·       Demonstration and practice of fundamental techniques (sawing, filing, shaping).

·       Texturing wax

·       Part 1 of carving the signet ring: design process, planning the shape and size of the signet ring. Begin carving the wax.

Day 2: Advanced Techniques and Finishing

·       Quick review of Day 1, answer any questions.

·       Part 2 of carving the signet ring: continue and refine the carving, focusing on details and final shaping.

·       Brief explanation and demonstration of adding wax layers to create volume and details.

·       Tips on smoothing the wax model, cleaning up edges, and preparing it for casting.

·       Brief overview of the casting process.

·       How to create your own carving tools

·       Tips for finishing the piece at home (cutting and filing the sprue and polishing).

Included Materials:

  • Wax + carving tools
  •  Up to 10g of sterling silver for casting your item, casting costs is included in the class price.

You’ll Leave With:

  • Knowledge on the wax carving and casting process.
  • An understanding on how to make your own wax carving tools.
  • Strategic sprue placement for better casting results.
  • Sanding and polishing knowledge.
  • A sterling silver signet ring (or your own ring design) within 20 business days of your class for you to sand and polish.

Open to all levels (must be 16 and up due to sharp tools being used), but best for beginners with little to no jewelry or wax work experience.

I'm SO excited that you're considering my help on your jewelry making journey! 🎉 Before we get started please read the entire section below so you know a little more about the details.

I keep my class sizes small to give you plenty of one-on-one attention which is something that I think makes my classes so effective. For my Introduction To Wax Carving class only, the minimum enrollment is 2 students. If I don’t reach this number, I unfortunately would be operating at a loss and would need to cancel the class. I absolutely understand how inconvenient that is but can guarantee that you will let you know at least 14 days before the class date so you can adjust any travel plans.

If you’re traveling from out of town and taking the intro to wax carving class, I recommend waiting to book flights or non-refundable accommodations until after you receive my Class Confirmation Email, which is sent once the class is officially a go, 14 days in advance.

My goal is to make your class experience smooth, inspiring, and worth every minute — and that starts with clear communication. I have an entire blog post on traveling to the area, airports, places to stay, eat, shop, etc.. You can read all about it here.

Cancellations & Refunds:

  • Cancellations made 14 days or more before the class date: Full refund.

  • Cancellations made 7–13 days before the class date: 50% refund.

  • Cancellations made less than 7 days before the class date: Non-refundable.

  • You may transfer your spot to another person at no additional cost but please just email me their name and information before class.

Minimum Enrollment:
Intro to Wax carving classes require a minimum of 2 to run. If I must cancel due to low enrollment, I will notify you no later than 14 days before the class date. You’ll have the choice of a full refund or credit toward a future class.

Missed Classes:
Due to the small, hands-on format, I cannot offer make-up sessions for missed classes.

Safety & Dress Code:

  • Closed-toe shoes are recommended but not required (I usually don't wear close toes shoes but you know, technicallllyyyy you should. That said, we are all adults, just take care of what you care about).

  • Long hair should be tied back to avoid incidents with rotary tools but same as before, just be careful.

  • Avoid loose clothing.

  • Safety glasses and respirators will be provided but please feel to bring your own if you'd like.

Arrival:
Please arrive 10–15 minutes early (I have a coffee machine and creamer if you'd like to make some coffee) so we can start on time.
